What are abdominal ultrasounds?

Abdominal ultrasounds are imaging tests that use high-frequency sound waves to generate images of your abdominal organs — liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bladder, kidneys, and reproductive organs — and the abdominal aorta.

For the test, the ultrasound technician places a handheld device called a transducer on the abdomen. The transducer transmits sound waves, which hit the organs and return to the transducer. It then delivers the sounds to a computer, which translates it into images.

Abdominal ultrasounds are safe, noninvasive tests that diagnose and monitor diseases and conditions of the abdomen.

When would I need abdominal ultrasounds?

You may need an abdominal ultrasound if your doctor has concerns about the health of an abdominal organ based on symptoms or lab work. The ultrasound also evaluates reproductive organs and fetal development during pregnancy.

Abdominal ultrasounds help diagnose conditions such as:

  • Gallbladder disease
  • Gallstones
  • Liver cancer
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Kidney cancer
  • Kidney stones
  • Pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)

Abdominal ultrasounds may also identify gynecological conditions like ovarian cysts and uterine fibroids. These ultrasounds also confirm pregnancy and help estimate the due date, as well as evaluate the fetus during pregnancy.

How do I prepare for abdominal ultrasounds?

The team at My Choice Imaging, LLC provides specific instructions on how to prepare for your ultrasound test. In most cases, no special preparation is necessary.

However, for some abdominal ultrasounds you may need to drink a large amount of water before the test and not urinate until after the imaging. Or, you may need to stop eating and drinking several hours before the ultrasound.

The team also requests that you wear clothing that allows easy access to the abdomen, and that you leave all valuables at home.

When can I expect results from abdominal ultrasounds?

The team at My Choice Imaging, LLC explains when you can expect your abdominal ultrasound results. The radiologists may provide some preliminary findings at the time of your procedure and write a thorough report after carefully evaluating the images from your ultrasound.

The radiologist sends the report to your referring physician, who then reviews the results with you.
